ALMANACK FOR THE YEAR OF CHRIST 1786. London, Company of Stationers, 1786.

(13) ff. A monthly calendar with a double-page engraving of the Bank of England and two other single-page engravings. Also with lists of Royals, holidays, coins, etc. Red stamp, arrarently contemporary, to title-page, else an uncommonly fine example, with the gilt and colored morocco onlays looking bright and fresh on the book and only a bit less so on the case. A.e.g. (2 14 by 1 5/8; 57x33mm.). (22120) $1,350.

[BROMER, ANNE & DAVID]. Edwards, Nancy Chandler. An Alphabet Book. (Boston), 1980.

24 pp. Although the colophon indicates that forty copies of this exquisite handcolored manuscript were executed, Nancy Edwards completed only thirty copies. Of these, twenty-two were for sale. The artist used the theme of nature in decorating the letters of the alphabet. Illustrations of animals, birds, fish, insects, and flowers are all meticulously and perfectly painted in watercolors. The book was bound in full blue morocco at Green Dragon Bindery, and the artist crocheted a dainty three-color bookmark for the manuscript. Nancy Edwards was the calligrapher for our deluxe copies of "Poems of Life" by Emily Dickinson, and we consider her work positively "jewel-like." A very fine copy. (see Bromer and Edison, p. 36). (1 1/4 by 1; 32x25mm.). (22254) $1,250.

CARNET DE BAL (dance card holder).

A nineteenth century French solid gold enamel binding containing five bone leaves. First appearing around 1820, the carnets de bal were used to record the order of an evening's dances, as well as the name of the partner for a particular dance. This opulent example is decorated with a leaf border; four rose-cut diamonds at the borders; and large polychrome enamel plaques in the center of each cover, the plaque on the top cover showing a pedestal topped by urns and with flowers at its base, the back cover plaque bearing the initials AM in a leafy script. Also includes the original gold-sheathed pencil topped with a rose-cut diamond. The pencil slides into six gold rings attached to the binding's fore-edges, to serve as a fastener. This is the most beautiful carnet de bal we have encountered, an extraordinary bejewelled example. (2 15/16 by 1 7/8; 75x49mm.). (21067) $22,500

[GAZETTE PRESS]. Life and Services of Gen. Pierce, Respectfully Dedicated to Gen. Lewis Cass. Concord, 1852.

14 pp. A humorous satire on the life of Franklin Pierce, considered the second piece of American presidential satire in miniature. This lampoon was issued during Pierce's controversial campaign for the presidency. After pages of insults, the author offers a reward of $100 if any of the information can be proven false. Pierce did become the fourteenth U.S. president, although he is better remembered for bringing the first Christmas tree to the White House than for his political achievements. Although extremely fragile in the original yellow wrappers, this is a nice copy of a scarce miniature. (Bromer and Edison 154; Welsh 4385). (1 9/16 by 15/16; 41x24mm.). (20088) $485.

LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. Proclamation of Emancipation by the President of the United States to Take Effect January 1st, 1863. (Boston, J.M. Forbes, 1863).

8 pp. The miniature Emancipation Proclamation is the first and only contemporary printing of Lincoln's great text in separate book form. The Emancipation Proclamation was announced on September 22, 1862 as an order by the Commander-in-Chief to the armed forces and published as part of a group of documents by the Government Printing Office on September 24, 1862. A preliminary draft was read to Lincoln's cabinet in July of that year, but the President waited for Union victory to enact it into law. It was signed after Union victory at Antietam. In addition to declaring all people free, this proclamation declares the Southern States to be in armed rebellion. On the back cover is a quotation from the Vice President of the "so-called Confederate States," calling slavery the cornerstone of a new edifice. This copy was owned by Senator Samuel G. Arnold of Rhode Island, and is in immaculate condition, very fine in pale peach printed wrappers. (Eberstadt 15; Oakleaf 823; Monaghan 235; not in NUC.). (3 5/16 by 2 1/4; 84x56mm.). (21768) $22,500.

[WILCOX, MICHAEL]. Lindsley, Kathleen. The Country Life. (W. Yorkshire, England, Fleece Press, 1997).

(50) pp. One of 300 copies written and illustrated by Kathleen Lindsley. This unique miniature volume features a designer binding by Michael Wilcox, the leading art binder in North America, and is bound in full green goatskin, with black and red onlays and gold tooling. The book's covers are decorated with the images of a rooster, wheel, and hops flowers, about which Wilcox comments, "The wheel/cocks/hops combination in this design is a ridiculous play on my name -- the sort of idea that would likely occur to me after visiting too many pubs." Wilcox also created a delicate line and wash design of hops in green and red especially for the endpapers. Inside, the book's pages contain nineteen detailed woodcut engravings that Lindsley designed for the Samuel Webster Brewery in Halifax, England. The engravings represent a variety country activities, animals, and scenes that were inspired by the names of local pubs owned by the brewing company. Housed in a black velvet-lined drop-back box with an acorn motif tooled in gold on the spine, this book is in as new condition. T.e.g. (2 1/2 by 1 7/8; 64x48mm.). (22441) $7,500
