Original illustration in red and black ink and pencil on paper. This drawing first appeared in Fifty Drawings by Alastair, published by Knopf in 1925, and a similar version was used in the Paris edition of Wilde's text published the same year....[Details]

One of 150 copies. Inscribed by St. John Hornby to "WMH," indicating his brother William Maysey Hornby. The text is taken from the Boke of St. Albans, printed at Westmestre by Wynkyn de Worde in 1496. Illustrated with woodcuts reproduced from same. From a projected edition of 290 copies, this is one of only ten copies that were preserved when the remainder of the edition was destroyed. Printed in red and black with initial letters and paragraph marks done by hand in blue by Graily Hewitt and his assistants. One of forty copies, all of which are on vellum. If the Opera of Dante can be considered Hornby's love letter to Renaissance Italian book design, then his Song of Songs is his most fully realized English book, as well as being an Ashendene book with the greatest Arts and Crafts aesthetic.
