[MARGARET ADAMS] Some Birds of Britain. (c. 1960). Small octavo. (13) ff. A hand-lettered and illustrated manuscript on vellum by English calligrapher and artist Margaret Adams. With illuminated initials and gorgeous gold-illuminated title-page.
Brief descriptions of various English birds, including the wren, the heron, the yellow hammer, and others, illustrated with exquisite watercolor vignettes of the birds at the head of each page.
Beneath the illustration is the name of the bird, in greeen, and under this the text, in black.
Bound in full green morocco, bearing a gilt design of a heron among reeds on the front cover and gilt lettering and designs to the spine.
Inscribed by Adams, in calligraphy, to Stuart Schimmel, the collector to whom the book was presented. With two handwritten, signed notes from Adams to Schimmel laid in, one welcoming the vacationing Schimmels to Stratford and offering to arrange a tour of Stanbrook Abbey, and the other discussing the book itself. Spine slightly toned, very minor bumping to corners of boards, else an extremely fine work of calligraphy by one of the modern masters of the art. A.e.g. Housed in a green cloth chemise and matching slipcase backed in morocco and lettered in gilt on the spine. (21930) $12,500.00 |
