F.W. BAIN Story of Haya and Gaja.

Illuminated manuscript on very thin vellum, undated and unsigned. An expertly lettered manuscript, with exquisitely finished floral and foliate ornaments, containing a plain title and nine pages of decorated text.

The first text page has a wide vine border with white daisy-like blossoms, their petals pink-tipped, and leaves in gold leaf and green.

There are twelve burnished gold-leaf initials, decorated with the same flowers in green, white, pink, and gold.

F.W. Bain's Indian tales date from 1899-1919, and were very popular with the Arts and Crafts movement. A fine work of art, possibly by Florence Kingsford, whose beautiful Song of Songs for the Ashendene Press is her best-known calligraphic manuscript. Nicely bound in limp vellum with gold and green woven silk ties. Extremely fine but for small chip to outer spine. (21815) $2750.00
