A reprint of the author's account of his coast-to-coast trek, originally published by Columbian Book Company in 1884. Includes a fold-out map of the U.S. showing Powers's route from Raleigh, NC, to San Francisco, as well as a reproduction of the title page to the original book. Powers spent ten months walking, making what became the last transcontinental foot journey before the railroads connected the two coasts. Along the way, he collected stories and observations about everyday Southerners and the struggles they faced. Fine in full cloth with gilt stamping to spine.
