32pp. One of 50-100 copies (not specified), signed by the illustrator, Barbara Raheb. This ancient counting song dates to a 13th-century manuscript housed at Cambridge University. It first appeared as a children's book in the year 1790. The reader joins in a medieval Christmas celebration by lifting the flaps throughout the miniature book. Beautifully illustrated in both color and black & white. Mint, bound in green leather with gilt-stamped title and Christmas dove design to front cover. Title gilt-stamped to spine. (Bradbury, p. 219). (1 1/16 by 3/4; 27x20mm).

With three autograph letters laid in from Wilbur Macey Stone, noted collector of children's and miniature books, dated 1935, 1937, and 1938. The set is comprised of three books by Walter Klinefelter: Christmas Books, A Bibliographical Check-List of Christmas Books, and More Christmas Books, to which WIlbur Macey Stone contributed the Introduction. Each has a presentation card laid in, signed by the printer, Fred Anthoenson. Together with A Printer's Christmas Books by Brooke Crutchley. Christmas Books is in the original box, which is lightly soiled and has a few splits to the lid. More Christmas Books is in the original glassine dust wrapper and has a two-color fold-out of a rare early broadside of "The Visit of St. Nicholas." A bibliographical Check-list of Christmas Books shows some slight wear to spine ends, else a fine set.

Dudley Short. Most of the illustrations are in black & white, but some are also printed in red, green, and yellow. At the end of the catalogue, a calendar and stationery are also offered for sale. Oblong 12mo. (14)ff. From an edition of 80 copies, this is one of forty printed for André Jammes, the French antiquarian bookseller. With a New Year's greeting inscribed on the first free endpaper from Jammes and his family. A beautifully-printed Christmas alphabet book with red calligraphic initials on each page. These elaborate initials were derived from a 1523 writing book by Ludovico Vicentino Degli Arrighi, an influential Italian bookseller, papal scribe, and later, typographer. Vicentino admired italic script and wrote an entire work about it; fittingly, this book is set entirely in Arrighi-Vicenza italic. The text is derived from a Christmas hymn and is represented in the original Latin. Extremely fine in paper-covered boards that look like vellum, in original brown card slipcase.

The Stork Shee Rose On Christmas Eve.

18ff., frenchfold. One of 150 copies printed on Japanese Moriki paper by Willis Shell, the proprietor of Attic Press. Cloister Black was selected as the typeface. Illustrations, printed in sepia, by Leslie Geiberberger. A delightful poem, supposedly written by King Edward VI of England, when he was eleven years old. Very fine in pictorial boards. (Bradbury p.14). (1 7/8 by 1 1/2; 48x40mm).

Three original blocks from the 1916 Christmas Greeting.

Originally issued as a small four-page greeting on Japanese vellum, this piece is noted as being one of the very few works printed by the Press during World War I. The press ceased production of nearly all but minor works during the war in the interest of propriety. According to Franklin, the text was reproduced from wide-nibbed calligraphy, presumably Graily Hewitt's. The first page of the greeting, printed from the first block, reads, "With best wishes for Christmas and the New Year from St. John and Cicely Hornby, Shelly House, Chelsea, 1916." Pages two and three originally included four stanzas of the poem signed by E.E.B., Hornby's old housemaster at Harrow, Bowen. These stanzas appear on the other two blocks included in this set. The greeting is noted in the Bridwell Library record, but was not recorded in the Ashendene Bibliography. Each block bears some oxidation; there is some distortion to the plate mounted to the second block. Overall a nearly fine artifact from one of the Triple Crown of English fine presses.

The story of a dreadfully bad boy who grew up to be "the infernalest wickedest scoundrel in his native village, and universally respected, and belongs in the Legislature," was written by Clemens for the San Francisco Californian on December 23, 1865. Light rubbing to extremities of marbled boards, text block mildly shaken, else a near fine copy of this rare, early book from the L-D Allen Press.
