Announcing "Urban Color: The World of
Leslie Gerry," opening September 12th
Bromer Gallery is excited to announce our next exhibition, "Urban Color: The World of Leslie Gerry," opening Thursday, September 12th, 2019.
On view through December 16th, the walls of the gallery will be resplendent with scenes from Havana, New York City, and Venice, piecing the elements of city life into a narrative of vibrant space. Streets and waterways, landmarks and local haunts, bright cars and ruddy boats ground each city in the daily beauty of its street life.
The exhibit will also serve as the debut of Leslie Gerry’s latest publication, New Yorkers & Dogs, an endearing portrayal of the pets who share the sidewalks with the rest of the city’s residents.
Trained at the Sydney College of Art, Gerry ran a prolific design studio in London with his wife Lorraine, focusing on corporate design, publishing, brochures, and museum graphics. For his graphic design work, Gerry used cut paper collages in the manner of Henri Matisse to "draw directly in color"; since then he has mastered the same effect in a digital environment.
Now, street life and architecture hold his imagination and have found form in limited edition prints and books. Gerry’s work captures the first exposure to a new urban vista with an intensity that renders the unfamiliar familiar and the familiar fresh. In Havana, classic cars sparkle in the sun, strangers become friends among nostalgic entryways and domino games, and once-tired architecture flowers in hues of blue, yellow, and white. In New York City, Gerry casts brightness on streets dominated by the shade of skyscrapers, while a rush of color invigorates the ordinary down below. And in Venice, towers and piazzas gleam softly over azure waters, and their glow unveils the romance of color that tempts the viewer toward wistful dreaming of a city they hardly know.
Images will be on display and available as individual prints or collected into books for purchase at Bromer Gallery. The exhibition will be on view until December 16th, and you are welcome to visit our showroom and gallery at 607 Boylston Street Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm.
