Gaskin, Georgie and Arthur (illus.)

(London: 1892). One mat with two openings, + (1)ff. An original pencil drawing for a wedding invitation design by Georgie Gaskin. The drawing is signed G. C. France, the artist's maiden name before she married Arthur Gaskin, a fellow artist and member of the Birmingham School of Art. The ornate invitation is for the wedding of Mary Elizabeth Belliss to Laurence Hodson, an important collector, philanthropist, and patron of the arts who was also a friend of William Morris and a supporter of the Arts & Crafts movement. The invitation is illustrated with a border of interlaced sweet pea vines and blossoms, with cherubs holding each of the four corners of the central panel bearing the names and the location of the event. Around the edges, depicted as if carved into stone, is the motto, "Poets are all who feel great truths and tell them. And the truth of truths is love." Together with a reproduction of the final printed invitation, and a small original print in red and black by Arthur Gaskin, inscribed by the artist with a Christmas greeting to Mr. & Mrs. Laurence Hodson. In very fine condition. (The invitation drawing measures 5 1/2 by 7 inches, the reproduction is slightly reduced to 4 3/4 by 5 3/4 inches, and the Christmas greeting measures 4 1/4 by 7 inches).
