Miniature Japanese block puzzle.

Japan: (c. 1910). 5 loose leaves + 1 adhered to upper lid of box + 6 six-sided blocks. Each leaf bears a chromolithographed image, which is meant to guide the user as they turn over the blocks and piece them together. The images feature both European and stereotypical Asian scenes. On the one hand, the blocks can create a fair-skinned child seated on a stool, a fair-skinned boy and girl holding a garland, and a racially ambiguous woman by the sea. On the other, they can form a Japanese singer enclosed in a lotus, children in Asian garb playing hide-and-seek, and a landscape of a Japanese garden. The subject matter is uncommon for this genre of toy; puzzles of similar shape and structure often hailed from Germany, and concerned themselves with fairy tales and nursery rhymes. All materials are housed in a paper box, with an inventory number stamped at the side. Scant expected rubbing to edges of blocks, minimal soiling to leaves, overall fine. Item #28918
