Gospels according to Luke, 24:10-53, and John, 1-2:19.

(France: Mid-13th century). Single leaf measuring 203mm. by 140mm., written in a minute gothic hand in black ink with glosses in red. Text includes the last forty-three verses of Luke and all of the first chapter of John, plus chapter 2, verses 1 through 19. A small miniature at the foot of the text (33 by 19mm.), rendered in blue, red, green and gold, shows the golden figure of John the Baptist prophesying before a crowd. Below him, a dove, representing the Holy Spirit, stands on a banner bearing his name, "Johannes." A twenty-line initial in blue, red, green, and gold denotes the start of the Book of John. The leaf is in fine condition, with only one small piece of adhesive tape attached to the verso from the matting. A beautiful example of a leaf from a deluxe copy of the Bible. Item #17763
