A Leaf from "The First of May," a Fairy Masque. With an Essay on Walter Crane by Carolyn Johnson.

Crane, Walter (illus.)

Fullerton, CA: Stone & Lorson, 1988. Folio. iv, 9ff. One of 50 copies designed and bound by Joseph D'Ambrosio, and signed by him, Carolyn Johnson, and Carmen Voss, the hand-colorist. This twentieth-century leaf book contains an original leaf from a portfolio edition of John R. Wise's poem "The First of May," illustrated and designed by Walter Crane (London, Sotheran, 1881). Crane's drawings, layout, and lettering of the text were done in pencil and printed in Paris. Sotheran's proudly announced, "The process adopted has been the Photo-gravure of Messrs Goupil & Co., a process well-known to Artists for its absolute faithfulness and exquisite softness, but hitherto comparatively unknown to the general public." The leaf included here is the title page, with the title and publication information surrounded by an elaborate floral border inhabited by fairies. Crane's plate has been delicately hand-colored by Carmen Voss. The unbound leaves are laid in to a linen clamshell box designed by D'Ambrosio to serve as a frame for the leaf, with a plexiglass panel and gold leaf inserts. Leaf shows some foxing around margins, very light soiling to linen of box, else fine. Item #18835
