When She Was About Sixteen.

Christy, Howard Chandler (illus.)

(Indianapolis): Bobbs Merrill, (1911). Small quarto. First edition. Illustrated with reproductions of drawings by Howard Chandler Christy, an American illustrator best known for his patriotic portraits of military men and romantic depictions of society women. The illustrations accompany a story in verse by the American poet James Whitcomb Riley. The poem is told in dialect and describes the courtship of the young narrator's parents, and the opposition that they faced from his mother's family. Printed on heavier paper, with borders in peach around the text and some of the illustrations, and peach highlights to the black & white plates. The illustrations are softly sketched and sentimental, depicting the events of the poem. Bound in olive green cloth, with a large, full-color pictorial label to the front cover, reproducing a painting by Christy, and titled in gilt. Extremely fine and bright, with only one small indentation to the rear cover. In the rare original box, with a pictorial design to the front cover, which has some edgewear, split corners, and a light spot of soiling to the lid. Having been kept in the box, this copy is in uncommonly fine condition. Item #24682

(BAL 16800).
