Oxford: University Press, 1838. Two near-miniature volumes. Unpaginated. Concealed under the gilt fore-edges of the two volumes are beautifully executed paintings by Martin Frost. The fore-edge painting on the first volume, which contains the Old Testament, depicts the Dohány Street Synagogue in Budapest. Built in the Moorish Revival style in the nineteenth century, it is the largest synagogue in Europe and equal to the great churches of the period. The painting on the fore-edge of the second volume, containing the New Testament, is a view of historic Westminster Abbey in London, the coronation church of the British monarchy since 1066. In a publisher's binding of dark brown leather with blind-stamped decorative borders to the covers and the original ribbon bookmarks. Titles gilt-stamped to spines. Ownership inscription to front endpaper of first volume, else an extremely fine set housed in the original lidded brown leather box. A.e.g. Signed label from the artist laid in.
