A Chapbook for Little Chaps.

Guthrie, Stuart (illus.)

(Flansham): Pear Tree Press, (1920). Octavo. 25pp. This collection of short children's poems is heavily illustrated with wood engravings by Stuart Guthrie, son of Pear Tree Press founder James Guthrie. The six full-page illustrations and fourteen smaller images used as head- and tailpieces are printed in four colors: blue, green, lilac, and rust. In his Introduction, Stuart Guthrie writes: "The setting and printing, as well as the illustrations, were an awful fag, and I had continually to remind myself that it was undertaken in the spirit of fun." It is clear that a great deal of time and love went into the creation of this colorful piece. Fine copy in variant binding of paper wrappers, printed with a light purple floral design. Wrappers detached from text block, with some darkening and edgewear; interior is bright, with occasional offsetting. Item #25903
