"Thumbelina"

Szyk, Arthur (illus.)

NY: Grosset & Dunlap, 1945. Original gouache illustration of Thumbelina from Arthur Szyk's illustrated edition of Andersen's Fairy Tales, signed and dated by the artist. In the illustration, Thumbelina, nestled in her walnut shell, shrinks away from a fat toad. In the story, the toad's mother had kidnapped Thumbelina as a bride for her son. In the printed version, the image is captioned: "'Croak, croak, croak,' was all her son could say for himself." Compared to the printed version, the gouache is much more delicate, with muted colors and greater sensitivity. The illustration is double-matted in gold and cream and framed in a gold-painted wooden frame. (Illustration measures 6 1/8 by 5 1/4 inches [155x133mm]. Frame measures 19 1/2 by 16 1/2 inches [500x415mm].) Together with: Andersen's Fairy Tales. NY, Grosset & Dunlap, (1945). Octavo. 327pp. Illustrated by Szyk with black & white illustrations throughout and ten colored plates. Part of the Illustrated Junior Library collection. Bound in pictorial boards, with original acetate jacket with "Andersen's Fairy Tales" printed to upper right corner. All edges dyed purple. Fading to dye at top and fore-edge, bookplate removed from inside front cover, and some chipping to edges of acetate jacket, else fine. Item #26781
