Five Fine Printers posters, with exhibition catalogue.

Bigus, Richard (illus.)

Davis, CA: Library Associates, University Library, University of California, Davis, 1979. Two copies of a poster designed by Richard Bigus announcing the "Five Fine Printers" exhibit and related events at the Memorial Union Art Gallery at the University of California, Davis. The exhibit ran from February 22 to April 10, 1979 and featured works by Bigus, Jack Stauffacher, Adrian Wilson, Andrew Hoyem, and William Everson. Accompanying the exhibit was a panel discussion with the printers, moderated by Fine Print editor and publisher Sandra Kirshenbaum. The posters showcase Bigus's affinity for typography, with the title in red in the center and repeating text about the events in two sections above and below. The repeating text is printed in black and gray, and if one looks closely, they can discern the shape of the numeral 5 in the gray portion, though with the top half of the number in the lower body of text, and vice versa. It is unclear if this was a deliberate choice on Bigus's part or a printing error, but the effect is that it encourages the viewer to look twice to see the hidden image. The posters are together with the catalogue for the exhibit, which has profiles of the printers and pictures of their work. This too was designed by Bigus. One poster has a pin hole at the top from when it was hung up on campus, otherwise the posters are in fine condition. The catalogue is waterstained at the lower spine, with some fading of the red ink on the front wrapper, and creased along the fore-edge, with some edgewear, else very good. Item #26910
