Petite Bibliothèque Portative.

Paris: Rignoux, 1823. Ten volumes, each with 48 pages. First edition. Illustrated with 68 plates from copper engravings and one folding map. Legrand's miniature library for children contains the following titles: Morale en Action; Mythologie; Geographie; Fables; Histoire de France; Contes; Animaux; Insectes; Mineralogie; and Botanique. Augustin Legrand (1765 - 1856) is credited with being one of the first authors of books directed exclusively for children in France. This set is very much in the same vein as Thomas Boreman's Gigantick Histories. Like their earlier English counterparts, complete sets of Legrand's Bibliothèque Portative are extremely rare, with only four recorded in institutional holdings. Bound in the publisher's original green printed wrappers, which are completely lacking on volume 6. Some minor rubbing and creasing to wrappers, otherwise a very nice set. (2 1/2 by 2 1/2; 63x63mm). Item #27035
