Boston: Mayhew & Baker, 1858. Square octavo. (32)pp., including wrappers. One of the Fireside Picture Books. Illustrated with nine large engravings and two smaller vignettes by "Morte". Each illustration is accompanied by one of the nine verses from the Mother Goose nursery rhyme "There was a Little Man, and he had a little gun." The prose text tells an expanded version of the rhyme, which covers the misadventures of Little Man Christy, his ornery donkey Miss Jenny, and his fat dog Waddy as Christy attempts to procure a meal for them all. The entire verse is printed at the end, as well as the sheet music for setting the rhyme to song. In wrappers printed in red and blue, advertisements on back. Some staining to wrappers and spine starting to split, else a near fine copy. Item #27451
