Antwerp: J.E. Buschmann, 1896. Octavo. 61pp. From an edition of 112, this is one of twelve copies for private circulation, and signed by the printer, Buschmann. Illustrated throughout by with eight fine full-page woodcut plates, several text figures, head- and tailpieces, and decorated initial letters printed in black and brown. Border on each page by the important Belgian symbolist artist, Charles Doudelet. The text is a Chanson de Geste from the Flemish, with two additional poems by Belgian author Paul de Mont. Doudelet made his entree into book illustration through his friendship with Maurice Maeterlink, and was one of Maeterlink's first illustrators. He would later design sets for Maeterlink's plays. Doudelet's work shows considerable influence from the Pre-Raphaelites, particularly Burne-Jones, and this influence is particularly evident in this handsome work. Rare: six copies recorded in institutions worldwide, with only two in the U.S. In the publisher's binding of full vellum with cover decorations in black. complete with four silk ties.
