The Columbian Riddler, or Entertaining Puzzle Book.

Concord, NH: Atwood & Brown, 1837. 16mo. 16pp. Illustrated with numerous woodcuts throughout. The title page notes that this is the fourth number in the seventh series; the previous year, the Riddler was in the sixth series, suggesting that this was an annual. Although many of the riddles were likely imported from English sources, several of the conundrums at the beginning have a distinctly local flavor: viz., "Why is Concord Main Street like the Merrimack River? Because it has a bank on both sides." Printed wrappers bear a different Concord, NH imprint, Boyd and White, and an 1839 date. Some spotting, else a nice copy of an uncommon chapbook. Item #27560

Price: $250.00
