The Making of the King James Bible: A Monograph, with Comparisons from the Bishops Bible and the Manuscript Annotations of 1602, with an Original Leaf from the Great "She" Bible of 1611.

Los Angeles: Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop, 1956. Folio. 31pp. One of 290 copies printed at the Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop. Though this title usually only includes one original leaf, this particular copy contains two, one from the Book of Proverbs and another from the Book of Matthew, both with two woodcut initials. The "Great She Bible of 1611" is really a corrected version printed in 1613 of the "Great He Bible of 1611", in which a typographic error results in the Book of Ruth having a "he", referring to Boaz, placed where a "she", referring to Ruth, should be. The "Great She Bible" is thus the second authorized printing of the King James Bible, with the "He" version being the first. Willoughby's comprehensive monograph on the King James Bible discusses the factors that impacted the first printing, and is illustrated with facsimiles from the 1611 edition. Leaves show some foxing and minor wear to edges, else fine. Bound in quarter cloth and printed boards in glassine. Some rubbing to corners and mark on front board. Near fine overall. Bookplate. Item #27637

(BCC #45; Chalmers 113, p. 84).
