Julius Firmicus Maternus and the Aldine Edition of the Scriptores Astronomici Veteres.

Los Angeles: Kenneth Karmiole, Bookseller, 1981. Quarto. 28pp. One of 164 copies. Scriptores Astronomici Veteres is a collection of Greek and Roman astrological texts, of which the most important is Maternus's Mathesis, the most extenstive astrological book from antiquity. Here, the original leaf is from Liber Octavus, printed by Aldus Manutius in Venice in 1499, bearing red, blue, and black inks, including a three-line initial in blue ink. The leaf is housed in a folded paper pocket after the title page. The rest of the volume is illustrated with woodcuts throughout the text and contains a bibliography at the end. Bound in gray cloth-backed boards, which show some fading to front cover near spine, else near fine, with printed paper label on spine. Bookplate. Item #27651

(Chalmers 172).
