Set of four Raggedy Ann books in original box.

Gruelle, Justin C. (illus.)

Springfield, MA: McLoughlin Bros. 1940-1941. Four quarto volumes. (60)pp. each. Illustrated throughout in color and black & white. This set of four volumes come from the McLoughlin Bros. series "The Little Color Classics," with the titles "Raggedy Ann Helps Grandpa Hoppergrass" (#843), "Raggedy Ann and the Hoppy Toad" (#844), "Raggedy Andy Goes Sailing" (#883), and "The Camel with the Wrinkled Knees" (#884). They mark the first Raggedy Ann stories printed after the death of their creator, Johnny Gruelle, in 1938. The "J. Gruelle" who signs the illustrations is thus the creator's brother, Justin C. Gruelle. Though all these books appear in Patricia Hall's 2001 bibliography of Gruelle, they are listed separately, without the box in which these are housed. Additionally, none of the books appear in the McLoughlin Brothers price list for 1940-1941. While #883 and #884 do appear in the price list for 1943, it is unclear whether the record refers to these particular volumes or to the 1943 editions of the same texts. The green open-top box shows Raggedy Ann on the front and bears a 1940 copyright and a McLoughlin Bros. series number of 1032. In its complete form, this set is particularly rare. Bumps to corners and some wear to extremities, wear and creasing to box, else near fine. Item #27688

(Hall, 137-138).
