Child's First Animal - Bird - Rhyme Book [cover title]

Newark / NY: Charles E. Graham & Co. (c. 1900). Quarto. (40)pp. Illustrated with sixteen bright full-page chromolithographed plates, including a magnificent two-page spread showing a yoke of oxen, plus another twenty-two pages of black & white illustrations. The book is divided into three sections: "Animal Pictures," "Our Bird Friends," and "Nursery Rhyme-Book." The richly detailed animal pictures show a variety of barnyard fauna, including horses, cattle, rabbits, cats, donkeys, and puppies. The section on birds contains two chromolithographed double-page spreads illustrating twenty birds, from a parrot to a vulture, as well as additional species in black & white. The "Nursery Rhyme-Book" offers nineteen rhymes illustrated with a number of black & white vignettes and four full-page chromolithographed plates. The plates represent four additional rhymes and show plump, rosy-cheeked children clearly inspired by Grace Drayton's Bobby Blake and Dolly Drake. Bound in cloth-backed paper-covered boards, with a chromolithographed label to the front cover. Ink stain to rear board, minor edgewear, bookseller's ticket to front free endpaper, else fine. A scarce children's book listed in only one library. Item #27700
