"The Invention of Printing"

Framed artwork measuring 13 by 11 3/4 inches. This piece replicates an original engraving first published in 1869 as the frontispiece to the second volume of Evert Duyckinck's History of the World from the Earliest Period to the Present Time. The image depicts in rich color an imagined scene of Gutenberg, identified by his long beard and fur cap, examining the first proof of his Bible. Around him are gathered three workers, with various instruments for printing lying about the background. The piece has been painted in oil on mill-board, which, according to a label on the back of the board, was sold by Winsor & Newton, an art-supply firm, which has retained a Royal Warrant since 1841. This image has now become iconic and can be seen through print and web sources, but never with this much detail or with this particular color palette. Housed in an elaborate gold frame, which shows minor wear, else fine. Item #27707
