London: Harris, John, 1816. 32mo. 16pp. Seven hand-colored full-page plates. A lyrical tale for children accompanied by a short poem by an unknown author. Throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries, John Harris was the pre-eminent English publisher of materials for children. Harris, unlike other children's publishers of the time, produced items that were meant not just to instruct, but also to amuse their readers. The present item exemplifies Harris' "cabinet of amusement and instruction" - as stated on its upper cover - through rich illustrations and desciptions of each insect. The 1816 edition is an enhancement of the 1808 edition, adding color to the plates and slightly adjusting the typography. Butterfly's Ball has inspired several other works, including a 1973 picture book by Alan Aldridge and William Plomer, an animated short, a rock opera, and an orchestral composition, and a miniature book by Anne and David Bromer. Housed in a black chemise with a black cloth slipcase with label at spine, fine. Book itself in paper wrappers with general wear to extremities and evidence of repair to spine. A fine copy of an edition rarely found. Item #27714
