The Mountain of Health; Or the Hour Improved.

NY: Day, Mahlon, 1833. 32mo. 16pp. Woodcut frontispiece and six additional woodcuts throughout. This children's chapbook describes the efforts of a desperate father to find a mentor for his wayward young daughter. He stumbles upon a school for small children, who every day ascend a bright mountain. The only student who reaches the top every time is a girl named Sophia, who receives blessings and good virtue equal to her alpine efforts. The story's emphasis on Sophia's individual efforts reflects the belief of the author, Lucy Lyttelton Cameron. Cameron, along with her more widely-read sister Mary Martha Sherwood, is credited with shifting the focus of children's literature away from conformity and communality in favor of individual challenges and virtues. Both Cameron and Sherwood were prolific writers whose works heavily reflected Victorian beliefs. Bound in plain printed wrappers with some foxing to text block and scant wear to edges. Fine.
