The Earth and Its Inhabitants.

(Bauer, Carl Johann Sigmund, attributed to) (illus.)

(Germany: c. 1820s). A miniature globe covered with varnished paper showing the continents, outlined in color by hand, accompanied by a 27-panel miniature folding panorama. The panels show inhabitants of different countries from around the world in characteristic costumes, hand-colored and labeled in English, German, and French. Many of the cultures are represented by both men and women in their native dress, including those from Greenland, Turkey, Tyrol, Russia, Persia, and Hungary, while the figures from England are shown in modern outfits alongside a woman in 16th-century dress. Other figures shown include a "native of Nova Scotia," a "bushman," "Calmucks," and a Chinese judge. The panorama is anchored to the inside of the original rectangular box, covered in green coated paper, and with a beautiful hand-colored engraved label showing three men in conversation, each wearing a different nation's traditional garb. Box shows some repairs to corners, with the usual creasing to sides. Panorama is partially split at second joint, otherwise it and the globe are in fine condition. (Whitton, p. 213 and color ill. 40; Houghton Library "Cataloguer's Choice" Exhibition, 1995). (Panorama measures 2 5/8 inches tall by 38 1/2 inches long, fully extended; globe measures approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter). Item #27787
