Nagasaka, Sekitai, et. al. (illus.)

Japan: (1918). 64mo. Eleven original sumi-e and watercolor paintings in an accordion-fold book. The paintings are dated Taisho 7, that is, the seventh year of the Taisho period, or 1918. The paintings depict various landscapes, flora, and fauna, and have been created by the artists Sekitai Nagasaka, Seisen Oka, Hiyakunen Suzuki, Sekitei Yoshida, Sekka Kamisaka, Yurin Ishikawa, Kyoun Kinoshita, Syukei Yamada, Kyosai Oda, and Yoshine Morimura. Mamehon, or miniature books, flourished in Japan from the 1670s through the nineteenth century, when they began to feature illustrations on nearly every page. This volume appears as a progression from that phase of Japanese miniature books, being entirely devoted to the art of the book over its textual content. Bound in gray patterned silk, in a blue silk chemise with wood clasp. Rubbing to boards and slight bumps to corners, else near fine with paintings clean and brilliant. Housed in a wooden box. Near fine. Bookplate of former owner. (Book measures 3 5/8 by 3 3/8 [91x86mm]; box measures 4 5/16 by 4 1/8 [110x105mm]). Item #28029
