Boldt, Emmy (illus.)

(Hamburg - Barmbek: c.1890). Quarto. (64)pp. Accordion-fold album, each page interleaved with protective tissue. Throughout the album, on both the fronts and backs of the folds, are various mounted paperworks, including 197 examples of paper folding, 52 pieces of paper basketwork, twenty-five pin-prick stitches, twenty-two geometrical silhouette works, and thirty-nine stitchery works on paper. These are all examples of Fröbel "gifts"—occupational tasks devised by Friedrich Fröbel, the acknowledged creator of kindergarten. Many albums like this one were compiled by young children in the nineteenth century as teaching aids. Fröbel's concept has been seen as a precursor to the abstract design movement, as embodied by the works of Frank Lloyd Wright and Piet Mondrain. Laid in are an additional eleven loose paperworks in progress and thirteen pencil sketches, as well as a late-nineteenth-century metal tool used for paper basketwork and a certificate dated 1892. Bound in black cloth with blind embossed ornamental decoration and gilt title to upper board. Housed in a black cloth clamshell box. Corners of album slightly bumped, some offsetting to interior pages, else a fine copy of some impressive handicrafts. Box shows general wear. Item #28055
