Moveable Shadows for the People.

Newman, W. (illus.)

London: Dean & Son, (1857). Small octavo. (9)ff. A very unusual and humorous children's book, with eight movable pages. On each page is a cut-out character, lithographed and hand-colored, standing against a wall. The figure may be moved aside by means of a tab, exposing the revealing shadow he has projected on the wall. A tottering inebriate labeled "A Drunken Pig" casts the shadow of a pig, a beckoning card-player casts the shadow of a shark, and a strutting officer's shadow is a rooster. Recased in original lithographed pictorial covers, and with new endpapers. Some marginal soiling and creases in pulltabs, two closed tears in rear flyleaf, lower corner of first four leaves chipped, liftoff near gutter on title page. Caption of final plate crossed out and replaced with a new label written in a contemporary hand. More Dean & Son movable books are advertised on the back. A rare Dean's movable book with only three copies in OCLC. Item #28121

(Osborne 419).
