Illustrated with thirty-two photographs in color taken by Poletto, who took them on the set of the 1963 motion picture directed by Lucchino Visconti. The novel, translated from the Italian by Archibald Colquhoun, grapples with the changes in Sicilian society brought on by the Risorigmento, or the unification of the different Italian states into a unified Kingdom of Italy. It is considered one of the most important Italian novels, and the proceeding film was awarded the Palme d'Or at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival.
