Birds Nesting.

Parry, Nicholas (illus.)

Market Drayton: Tern Press, 1987. Folio. (60)pp. One of 90 copies signed by Nicholas and Mary Parry, the printers. Clare's delightful verses "...mark the nests of many sorts/ & which in building most excells/ the number of their eggs to note/ & curious colour of the shells," was written in about 1830. His close descriptions of the nests and habits of several English birds is taken direct from his hand-written copybook. Nicholas Parry is at his best in these twenty colored linocut illustrations, seventeen of them full-page. The cutting is so fine one would think them to be wood engravings. They use two to three color blocks and touches of watercolor applied by hand. This must be the loveliest of the Tern Press books. Other than minimal bumping to corners, a near copy in boards covered with printed cloth and paper label. Item #28462
