The Bridge.

Shapiro, Joel (illus.)

San Francisco: Arion Press, 2017. Scroll, with accompanying tall quarto booklet. One of 300 copies, signed by the artist, Joel Shapiro, and the publisher, Andrew Hoyem. Illustrated with seven woodblock prints by Shapiro and two photographs of the Brooklyn Bridge by Michael Kenna. Crane's masterwork is a massive, participatory poem that relies on a continuous dialogue between specificity and abstraction. It has come to bear as the centerpiece to the literary tradition of its time, representing a pivotal moment between the realities of the turn of the 20th century and the angst of the Great Depression. Crane saw the Brooklyn Bridge as the essence of the poem, the ultimate symbol for what he could not acheive purely through words. Shapiro's woodblocks recreate the bridge piece by piece, and the lengthy scroll structure lays out a bridge of its own as it unravels. With an Introduction by Langdon Hammer. Scroll set on metal spool and reinforced with grey binding cloth. Booklet bound in grey-blue cloth. All housed in cloth-covered box witih foil-stamped lid. Faint scuffing to underside of lid, otherwise a very fine copy of an imaginitive publication. With prospectus in original mailing envelope. Item #28656
