Hassall, John (illus.)

London: Grant Richards, 1904. 103pp. A comical miniature illustrating the inhabitants of London and poking fun at everyone from the telegraph boy to the sentry at Buckingham Palace. Full-page color plates by the famous British poster artist and illustrator John Hassall are accompanied by rhyming verses. In a limerick about the Commissionaire, the author quips, "The Commissionaire stands by the door,/ In a restaurant, office or store,/ He's respectful and bland,/ And looks awfully grand,/ And really, that's just what he's for." Bound in paper over thick boards, and housed in printed yellow slipcase designed to resemble a matchbox. Both in fine shape. A rare survival, with only five copies listed in institutions. (Welsh 4694). (2 1/4 by 1 1/2; 59x37mm). Item #28835
