Heures aux Cavaliers. L'Exercise du Cavalier Chrestien. Pour Chacque Iour de la Semaine.

Paris: P. Rocolet, 1664. 320pp. Engraved frontispiece depicting two worshippers in stately garb each standing atop a heraldic device. This book of hours was designed with travelers in mind, from its convenient size to its durable binding to its conclusion, which bears a prayer specifically for those on a journey. Its compositor, Irenee d'Eu, was the confessor for Pierre Seguier, the Chancellor of France from 1635 to 1651. He began his career under Cardinal Richelieu, and his authority survived long after the deaths of Richelieu and Louis XIII in 1642, and even after his retirement served on various state councils and commissions, and as the official "protector" of the Academie Francaise.

The book's binding, done in fine needlepoint, has been sewn in shining silver silk thread, with floral decoration on both covers in green, blue, black, pink, yellow, and white. On both sides, two bouquets stretch from the top and bottom toward two intertwined hearts at the very center. On the spine is a repeating hourglass pattern, framed in black and likewise adorned with silver. The lining is pink silk, with endbands in blue and yellow. A binding of similar style and material is found as number forty-three in Sabine Coron and Martine Lefevre's 1995 catalog, in which they suggest that the style is of English fashion. Minimal, if any, wear to exterior, toning to where interior lining is exposed over textblock, else fine. A.e.g. Item #28844
