Glasgow: Robert and Andrew Foulis, 1756-58. Four quarto volumes. xi, 312; (iv), 336; (vii), 297; (iv), 336pp. Edited by Professors James Moor and George Muirhead, and printed throughout in Greek. This is the magnum opus of the Press. The brothers Foulis had a special font of Greek type cut by Alexander Wilson, and its setting in the Homer shows it to good effect. Dibden quotes Harwood as saying that it is "one of the most splendid editions of Homer... its accuracy is equal to its magnificence." Bound in full, contemporary ochre calf; spines gilt in six compartments with brown lettering pieces. All edges red. Surface wear and rubbing to boards, foxing to a few preliminary leaves, paper repair to one page in volume four, else a near fine set of this highspot of fine printing. Ownership inscription of J.E.R. Oldfield on front paste-down of each volume. Item #28871
(Gaskell 319; Dibdin II58).
