Epithalamion.

(New York: Fleming & Carnrick, 1898). Quarto. 28ff. Decorated title page printed in four colors; twenty-three ornamental initial capitals printed in red and gold. Spenser's poem celebrating his marriage to Elizabeth Boyle is presumably printed here to mark the occasion of the nuptials of one of the printing firm's partners -- Frank Fleming. The dedication page reads "S.H.D from F.R.F. August twenty-seven eighteen hundred and ninety-eight." Fleming and Carnrick worked primarily as job printers from the latter half of the 19th century into the early part of the 20th century. At the time this was published, the firm was located at 520 Broadway in New York. The present work shows the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement on book design. Bound in the style of editions de luxe, featuring medium blue levant titled in gilt on upper cover framed by a single gilt rule. Watered silk doublures. Some sunning to spine and light rubbing to extremities. A very good or better example of an uncommon work, known in a single institutional holding. Item #29212
