Arnal, Ch. (illus.)

Paris: Mazerand, (c. 1890). Six square pop-ups, each elaborately recreating a chromolithographed Parisian landmark. Notre-Dame, Place de la Concorde, Place de l'Opéra, Hôtel de Ville, Palais de Justice, and Place du Carrousel are each shown with remarkable depth, set back against rivers, bridges, and streets, and under light cast across soft skies. The panoramic views evoke the city's characteristic nostalgia, as well as its history, since by the presence or absence of various details, the illustrations indicate a particular period of the Belle Époque. Whether as a tourist souvenir, a publicity offering, or a didactic tool, the pop-ups present a curious and engaging complement to the celebration of Paris in the age of World Expositions. Some repair work to original illustrated box, else fine. Item #29798
