"He Will Not Be Right Back After This Message"
1980. Original artwork. Pen, ink, watercolor, graphite, and wash on stiff card. The bereaved gather around the deceased's coffin as the undertaker pulls back a veil to reveal a will, taped as a video message. The mourners are a typically Gorey-esque cast of characters, including a shrouded widow, a man with a luxuriant moustache, a flapper girl, and a cat, while two grim-faced children look on from afar. This piece was produced to accompany a TV Guide Magazine article discussing the benefits and pitfalls of the new post-mortem fad. Adhered to backing and mat. A fine, humorous example of Gorey's artistic work. (Measures 7 3/16 by 10 in.; 184 x 255 mm). Item #29914
