(Philadelphia): Alice Austin, 2019. Tunnel book consisting of six panels connected with illustrated accordion-folded side panels. The three-dimensional scene revealed when the book is expanded shows the beauty and chaos of Venice's Grand Canal, from the natural world, to the built environment, and the life that inhabits the shared space. Each panel is die-cut and printed from hand-carved linoleum blocks in magenta and navy, with a bright orange sun on the back panel visible through the arch of the Rialto Bridge on a previous panel. Along the way, an egret looks for its next dinner, gondoliers carry their passengers between tall Venetian buildings, and, lingering menacingly in the background, an enormous cruise ship threatens to overshadow it all, appearing to almost overtake the sun itself, along with the life and culture of the city. The side panels reflect the dynamism of the canal, showing the movement of the water as rowers train for the Regatta Storica gondola race.
One of just twenty copies, signed and numbered by the artist, Alice Austin. The whole is housed in a marbled paper-covered box with a magnet enclosure. Tunnel book and box as new.
