The Man of the Crowd / L'homme des foules.

Franklin, Richard (illus.)

Basel: Franklin Éditeur, 1997. Oblong 24mo. (22)ff., unbound, printed rectos only. One of 50 copies, signed by the artist, Richard Franklin, below the colophon and inscribed as an hors d'commerce copy. Franklin's haunting woodcuts of wasted and deformed figures—often skeletal, and as horrified as they are horrifying—bookend the text and illustrate the concluding poem. The disturbing nature of the imagery alerts the reader not only to the unsettling content of Poe's tale, but also to the eerie linguistic finesse of Baudelaire's French translation. Titles and French translation of the poem printed in green. Sheets housed in black paper chemise with typographically illustrated cover, protected by an orange cloth slipcase. Minor bumps to corners, some sunning to chemise, insignificant toning to slipcase, else near fine. A rare edition, not recorded in OCLC. Item #30060
