Cohen, Claudia (illus.)

Woodmere, NY: Pardes Rimonim Press, 1987. Octavo. (281)pp. One of 100 copies. Eighty woodcuts inset to the text, all recut after those appearing in the original 1546 edition of Sahula's work, printed in Venice. Sahula, active in the 13th century, produced this work of fables as a specifically Jewish, moralistic counterpoint to other popular, lighter medieval tales, of the likes of Sinbad the Sailor. Cleverly structured as an argument between a Cynic and a Moralist, the narrative relies, in part, on scientific material to uphold the main virtues of wisdom, penitence, sound counsel, humility, and reverence. Printed in Hebrew, in black with blue initial. In the publisher's binding by Claudia Cohen of quarter blue morocco with giltwork to spine and pale paper over boards. Fine. Item #30109
