(Blue Heron Press)

Mexican Gothic.

Kunc, Karen (illus.)

(Lincoln, Nebraska): Blue Heron Press, 1993. Small octavo. (20)ff., concertina. One of fifty copies. Signed by the poet, Vinnie-Marie D'Ambrosio, and the artist, Karen Kunc. D'Ambrosio's poem on Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera here receives a haunting, colorful treatment through reduction woodcuts by Kunc. Images of hands, faces, and more abstract forms combine in a space that extends out to 80 inches tall, while remaining only 4 inches wide, taking the shape of a calavera, or skeleton. The result is an exuberant meditation on life and death through the life-affirming feast day of death, El Diá de los Muertos. The topmost sheet has a small hole so that the work may be hung aloft. Housed in paper slipcase, slightly creased, else near fine. Item #30110
