Schumann, Peter (illus.)

Newark, VT: Janus Press, 2011. Twenty-four 16mo. chapbooks, housed in quarto trifold portfolio. Each chapbook (8)ff. One of 120 copies, signed by Peter Schumann, whose charcoal-and-ink drawings illustrate the interiors and whose crayon drawings grace the covers. Here, Schumann explores the format of Latin American cordells, chapbooks traditionally sold by poets in street markets by being strung up like laundry to offered on trays. A key medium for popular, ephemeral literature, "litteratura de cordel" disseminate a range of subjects, from politics to tales to weather patterns. Schumann embraces the same, and the result is an enjoyable and evocative grouping of stories. All drawings rendered as scans. Booklets sewn to their decorative wrappings. Display pocket panels are Fabriano Miliani Ingres, with cloth-covered portfolio and paper slipcase, both with wood type titles. Some soiling to slipcase, else near fine. Item #30141
