Girls' and Boys' Primer. Together with: an ALS from a father at war to his children.

Concord, NH: Rufus Merrill, (c. 1840). 64mo. 16pp. Engraving on title page, plus twenty-six more to illustrate the alphabet. A standard primer of letters, numbers, spelling lessons, and several moral poems. Bound in pink wrappers, front cover fairly sunned, near fine. Together with an ALS from a soldier, Joshua Bogarts, to his son, stating that the book is a gift to his daughter, "Ally." The letter also mentions several other gifts, including other books and packets of seeds, as well as instructions for recouping payment from a neighbor. The letter's verso lists other soliders, and, based on the difference in ink, was presumably written asynchronously to the letter. Two-inch tear to fold, else kept crisp, and with its postmarked and stamped envelope. Item #30470
