Aesop's Fables.

Frink, Elizabeth (illus.)

London: R. Alistair McAlpine Publishing Limited, 1968. Oblong octavo. (110)pp. One of 250 copies, signed by the artist, Elizabeth Frink, on the front flyleaf, and with the stated four additional original lithographs bound in at the rear. Throughout, Frink's lithographed illustrations bring lightness to what appears at first to be a heavy, lush production. With all the surety and simplicity of line reminiscent of Calder or Cocteau, but with a discerning attention to color and shading, Frink balances the basic with the complex, the primitive with the elaborate. The same is true of the text, which distills Aesop's fables into, at most, a lengthy paragraph, and most frequently as a short proverbial blurb. The result is an entertaining and joyful compendium of word and image, bound in orange morocco and with a golden yellow morocco upper cover, which boasts a large abstract geometric design and titling in embossed gilt. Some rubbing to edges, else near fine in green slipcase. Final lithographs lack Frink's signature. Item #30700
