(Pop-up Book)

White Book.

Gabbiani, Francesca (illus.)

Paris: Xn Editions & Christopher Daviet-Thery, 2005. Small octavo. Accordion-fold structure printed on one side, with papercut on front cover and three intricate pop-up architectural structures designed by Francesca Gabbiani, and engineered by Ingrid Siliakus. One of twenty copies, signed by the artist. Of Gabbiani's haunting paper art, her father-in-law, Ed Ruscha, has called them "elaborate entrances into other worlds." This work draws upon Erik Larson's novel, The Devil in the White City, about the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and a serial killer who stalked Chicago around the same time. The play of shadow and light on these white pop-up elements conveys the sense of wonderment and unease that run through the brief text by Amy Gerstler, spoken by one of the killer's victims as she is lured to her death. Very fine in a cloth slipcase. Item #31173
