(Miniature Book)

The Ancient Art of Ebru.

Muir, Ann (illus.)

Oldham, UK: Incline Press, 2004. (vi), 9pp., + 10 samples interleaved with tissue paper. One of 100 copies, signed by Ann Muir, who wrote the text, created the miniature examples of ebru papers, and bound the book. Printed letterpress from Bembo and Union Pearl types. In her short essay at the start of the book, Muir writes about her experiments in miniaturizing marbled pictures in the style of Turkish ebru paper. In the end, she used a tray measuring four inches square and ultra-fine needles, writing: "It has been a joy to reduce my working space to a table top for this book and because the resulting mess is likewise reduced, it can be done on a table at home. Small is a good discipline." The marbled pictures range from flowers and trees, to fish and insects, including a delicate spider in its web, all on sheets measuring just 2 1/4 inches tall by 1 1/2 inches wide. Bound in Muir's marbled paper over boards, with a matching slipcase. Light edgewear and a hint of fading to spine, else fine. Together with: a regular edition copy of the book, which includes the essay but no paper samples. Fine in marbled paper wrappers. (Deluxe copy: 2 15/16 by 2 1/4; 75x57mm. Regular copy: 3 5/16 by 2 1/2; 83x53mm). Item #31204
