Harold von Schmidt Draws and Paints the Old West.
Flagstaff: Northland Press, 1972. Quarto. xviii, 230pp. One of 104 copies. Signed at the limitation by von Schmidt and Reed. Accompanied, as issued, by von Schmidt's first sculpture, "The Startled Grizzly." This copy also had, laid in, an original uncancelled postage stamp designed by von Schmidt, which is mounted on a card bearing his signature. Four more stamps are also laid in. Over 220 illustrations, 50 in color, by von Schmidt provide dazzling visual aid to Reed's narrative of the artist's life and career, as he emerged from the anonymity of his days as a cow hand and lumberjack to become one of the foremost illustrators of the American West. The volume thus encapsulates an age and a landscape, and upholds von Schmidt as its due artistic prophet. It does so with measured success, having won the Western Hertage Award in 1972 for best Western art book. Bound in quarter leather with red cloth over boards. Fine, in slipcase. Item #31351
